NDP MP calls for better workers protections for airline workers

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 26, 2024

OTTAWA – On Monday, NDP MP Bonita Zarrillo (Port Moody – Coquitlam) told the Liberals to stop letting big airlines get away with mistreating their workers. As it stands, flight attendants for Canada’s major airlines work an average of 40 hours of unpaid work each month. At the same time, big airline CEOs are making huge profits while refusing to pay staff their fair share – the Air Canada CEO makes $12.4 million, more than 430 times the average salary of a flight attendant.
Zarrillo is pushing the Liberals to stop giving a free pass to big airline companies who don’t give their workers the respect they deserve.
Here is Zarrillo’s question:
“Everyone deserves fair pay, and to be treated with respect by their employer.
Yet for flight attendants – they have to work up the 40 hours a month with no pay - that's 3 months a year.
All while CEOs of Canada’s biggest airlines rake in millions of dollars, plus bonuses.
And the Liberals – they’re doing nothing about it - letting CEO's get rich off the backs of unpaid work.
Will this government stop the exploitation of workers and address unpaid work in the airline industry?”
Watch Zarrillo demand fair treatment for all workers.
