NDP MP urges government to act on affordable housing for Port Moody

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 19, 2024

OTTAWA —On Wednesday, NDP MP Bonita Zarrillo (Port Moody-Coquitlam) asked the Prime Minister why his government has delayed starting construction to build more affordable housing in Port Moody.
The city and community partners have identified the closed Canada Post office at 45 Mary Street as a good location to build affordable housing for seniors but have yet to hear back from the federal government for plans to redevelop the building.
“It is baffling that in a housing crisis, the government is delaying such a good opportunity,” said MP Zarrillo. “Seniors in our country continue to get left behind because of government inaction.”
MP Zarrillo has consistently stood up in the House of Commons demanding more homes people can afford in Port Moody—Coquitlam. But time and time again, the Liberals have shown they would rather keep delaying building affordable homes, and the Conservatives would rather leave building homes to big wealthy developers to make more money on the backs of Canadians.
“Having a roof over your head and a safe place to call home is a basic human right and the Liberals’ delays are only making the housing crisis worse for seniors and families trying to find a home they can afford,” said Zarrillo. “And unlike the Conservatives who only want to help their corporate investors get richer by building luxury condos no one can afford, New Democrats are fighting every day, pushing the government to build affordable homes on public land and invest more in affordable housing so everyone can have a safe place to live that fits their budget.”
