NDP MP Zarrillo stands in support of Iranian women’s rights

OTTAWA – Today, NDP MP Bonita Zarrillo, spoke in the House of Commons in support of Iranian women across Canada and around the world who are protesting and fighting for their human rights.
“The people of Port Moody–Coquitlam, Anmore, and Belcarra are horrified and angry about the brutal murder of Mahsa Amini,” said Zarrillo. “Our community is adding its voices to the women of the world protesting long-standing human rights abuses in Iran.”
Zarrillo pointed out that women in Iran are standing up at great risk to their personal safety, with heinous consequences like the death of 16-year-old Nika Shahkarami.
“This must stop. No Iranian should live in fear. They should have protections in Iran and here in Canada too,” said Zarrillo. “Yet many here do not feel safe. Because high ranking IRGC officials and their families visit and live in Canada and have not been sanctioned. That is a failing of this Liberal government.”
Last weekend, while in Winnipeg for work, Zarillo stood with thousands of people standing with Iranian women fighting for their human rights.
New Democrats stand with the women of Iran, and wholly support the UN Human Rights Commissioner’s call for an independent investigation into Mahsa’s death. We are holding this government accountable in supporting women's rights in Iran and around the world.
